There are several container water gardens on the property. These gardens contain various aquatic plants such as Water Lettuce, Water Hyacinth, Irises, Cannas, many varieties of Lilies, Elephant Ears, Umbrella Palms, Horsetail, and more. Soon we will even have Lotus Flower. Throughout our site you will be able to find detailed articles on each of our water gardens, their construction, and plant details along with plenty of photos to enjoy.

I was wondering if you would be willing to go into some detail in regards to the plants displayed in the round terracotta water garden. For example, how is the elephant ears plant planted? In searching for information on this plant on the web, I see that it is planted in soil yet you have it submerged in the water garden.
Thanks (in advance),
Joel
Hello Joel,
I have a large plant container, maybe about three gallons, in the middle of the water garden filled with regular yard soil. The clay here in the South is great for these plants as it has a lot of trace minerals. That container has a black elephant ear, umbrella palm, black gamecock iris, and horsetail planted in it. Elephant ears will live in bog type conditions, so it works planted in this manner. The floating plants are water hyacinth, water lettuce, and parrot feather. I have a couple hardy water lilies in small containers sitting on the bottom of the terracotta container. One is a pink grapefruit and the other is a Colorado, I think. Both of them are in yard soil as well. Through late spring and early summer I poke some pond plant fertilizer tablets down in the pots (one for each lily and two or three in the center pot) about once a month and they all grow like crazy. I throw in a dozen mosquito fish in the spring, and end up with tens to hundreds by summer’s end.
Cheers,
David J.
